Overview on Sin for the Seminar Overview on Sin
by Jack Horn

Brothers, in this conference, we are going to be talking about the problem of mankind. The problem
of mankind is sin. We will be talking about three kinds of sin.

The first is sin as a power, like a person.
The second is the acts of sin mankind does: Things that are not the will of God. Rebellion against
God's authority. Everyday living in ways that are not God's ways.
The third is the sin nature.
We will also be talking about God's solution to mankind’s problem. The solution is Jesus and the
cross.
WHERE THE PROBLEM STARTED

Eph 2:1-3 (RSV) "And you he made alive, when you were dead through the trespasses and
sins 2in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of
the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience. 3Among
these we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, following the desires of body and mind,
and so we were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind."

We were by nature children of God's wrath. Notice the scripture identifies the kingdom we were
living in: The kingdom of this world. It is ruled by the prince of the power of the air. That spirit was
working in us. Satan, the devil, is the ruler of that spirit.

Gen 2:16-17 (RSV) "And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, "You may freely
eat of every tree of the garden; 17but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you
shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.""

God commanded man not to eat the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. For in the
day you shall eat of it, you shall surely die.

God gave man a law, "don't eat this fruit".

Gen 3:1-6 (RSV) "Now the serpent was more subtle than any other wild creature that the
LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God say, 'You shall not eat of any tree
of the garden'?" 2And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees
of the garden; 3but God said, 'You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst
of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.'" 4But the serpent said to the woman,
"You will not die. 5For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and
you will be like God, knowing good and evil." 6So when the woman saw that the tree was
good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to
make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, and he
ate."

First, God gave the man authority over the serpent in
Gen 1:26 (RSV) “Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and
let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the
cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.""
